Children receiving de-worming pills 07 March 2005
Jeff Morgan (see additional story below) was recently in an isolated area of South America distributing de-worming pills. He obtained permission from the authorities to distribute in a school. However, the next day he was met by a group of furious parents. One man threatened him with a knife. Why? They accused him of witchcraft. The children told the parents that they had been given a pill "for worms." Evidently the children passed so many worms that it frightened the parents and, being of an animistic culture, they concluded that the pills actually made the worms happen! The moral? Get permission from the parents too! And clue them in on what the pills do.

The mother of a Japanese student wrote in her letter, "After World War II, I had not enough foods. I suffered from worms too. My mother forced me to drink Makuri (worm medicine). I used to drink it down with tears because it tasted so bad. I remember even now the fear of worms getting out from the bottom. I think it is terrible to keep full worms of both hands in a stomach." (cupped hands full of worms).

During the country-wide distribution in Nicaragua where some 1,300,000 pills were distributed to the school children, the medical team evaluating the results visited a seaside town. They were told of the case of a small child who was not walking or talking. After receiving the de-worming pill the child is now both walking and talking. The team reported that there were no untoward side effects from the entire distribution.
