NEW MATH (and WORMS) Go to Sunday School
by Charlotte Glick

Recently some WJCC Sunday School students were presented with a math challenge on the large blackboard that graces their class room. Their careful calculations that day may be responsible for actually saving the lives of children as well as greatly improving the quality of their lives.

John, Mary, Sara, Jon, Katherine, Ryan, Susan, Jeremy, Rich, Aaron, and Ramon have been earning pennies in the classroom by attendance, bringing their Bible, bringing friends, learning the books of the Bible, memorizing verses, etc. Originally they were planning to buy a gift for the Guatamala team to take to a child there. However, teacher Charlotte received an e-mail outlining a way to address a huge problem for many children in poor countries.

The math challenge in the mailing explained a way to deal with worms that rob children of the nutrients in the little food they do get. No, the idea of worms didn't turn off even the most delicate of us.

Interest was alive immediately! Here's how they tackled the questions: Since worms eat 1 oz. of a child's ingested food per day, how many days will it take for a child to lose one pound? 16 days.

One pill will cure a child for six months. How many pounds will a child lose in six months if he doesn't have a pill to take? About ten pounds!

How many pills will $5.00 buy if each pill costs $.05? 100 pills!

How many pounds of food will children be able to use instead of lose if 100 pills are bought for $5.00? 1000 pounds!

The class could think of no other way to send 1000 pounds of food for $5.00 to hungry children. Can you?

The result is that the class wants to keep earning those pennies for worms. Whoever said a penny isn't worth much these days?
